Seagrass rehabilitation

Research by various scientist in Lakshadweep have found that the major cause of seagrass decline in the lagoons of almost all atolls in Lakshadweep is due to overgrazing by green sea turtles.  Simple exclusion experiments of this megaherbivore has shown a drastic recovery in both diversity and cover of seagrasses .  Currently REEF is engaged in finding ways to upscale these efforts in restore patches of seagrass meadows in Lakshadweep islands.

Seagrass surveys

In  March and April of 2024 , REEF has conducted surveys on the status of seagrass meadows in the  lagoons of 4 islands in Lakshadweep (Agatti, Kavaratti, Kadmat and Andrott). A vast decrease of both diversity and area cover was recorded in these 4 islands, with only a few remanent patches found in once historically lush seagrass meadow areas .
