About Us

REEF was founded in 2022 by two Phd scholars and a very enthusiatic  dive instructor. We grew up in a time when life was still simple in the islands where, beaches were clean, fish were plenty , corals abundant and large meadows of vibrant  seagrass  covering the lagoons.  Life was just sun sand and crystal clear waters. Tuna fishing and cocount plantations were the  main source of income and a way of life.

As with everything, things change , but the changes that were noticed were rapid, drastic and  negative. Within the last 15 years,  beaches were  rapidly eroded, seagrass medows  reduced to few sparse unrecognizable patches, Corals dying due to repeatedly bleaching , fishing becoming harder  with boats having to going out longer and further and a sudden increase in cyclones..

Though global warming is much to blame for the most of the decline in our environment and are  not entirely  in  our control , we started this NGO with a mission to protect biodiversity and ocean life by actively engaging and inspiring the public through citizen science, classroom education and partnership with the scientific  community.

With the help and colaboration of local schools in the islands we have been constantly involved in educating the next generation on sustainability, and marine environment . .We have been helping fishermen find alternative sources of income, empowering women with SHG's and more importantly monitoring and restoring the seagrass and reef environments.

We welcome the Indian and local govt, The Lakshadweep forest departnment, Indian and international research scholars, students, local community leaders . and citizens to work with us in preserving and protecting the natural ecosystem and way of life of Lakshadweep islands.
